How to get rust off of metal door hinges. Wd40 is one of my favorite products and a staple in my workshop but i always use dry graphite or spray silicone lubricant on hinges. For example start with all the top hinges. Rust accumulates on door hinges when moisture is allowed to build up on the surface of the metal. To avoid removing the doors systematically remove one hinge from each door. Goes on clear and turns black.
I use steel wool 000 to 0000 to remove rust off metal. The moisture mixes with oxygen and forms rust. Luckily the rust on my hinges was not too deep and i was able to get it all off between the soaking and the scrubbing. In addition to its unsightly appearance rust can corrode and weaken the structure of metal causing holes to appear and increasing the possibility of the hinge breaking or snapping when the door opens.
