How to install a door handle. Installing a door handle is a relatively easy home project that you can do with a pre made kit. Use a phillips head screwdriver and turn the screws counterclockwise to loosen them. Install both knobs by sliding the spindle through the slot in the latch. Align the two long screws from the inside knob into the cylinders on the exterior door knob and tighten the screws.
Remove the two screws holding the strike plate in place on the door jamb and install the new one in the same position. Put your tape measure on the floor in front of your door and measure up 41 inches from the floor since this is the most common placement for door handles. As the screws become loose the knob should also become loose. Repeat this process to attach the other faceplate.
If your new door handle attaches to the door at a point below the lower borehole like ours you may need to drill another hole to accommodate. If you re installing a lever handle rotate the outside handle to the left or right according to your door handedness before moving on. Step 1 remove the screws in the faceplate of the doorknob if they re visible. Use a shorter screwdriver so it doesn t slip out and strip the screws step 2 insert a sharp object into the latch hole if there aren t visible screws.
Slide the faceplate over the door handle and snap it into place. Traditional doorknobs will have two screws in the faceplate. It must line up with the holes in the latch assembly to function properly. Place the new handle onto the outside of the door.
Line up the spindle on the back of the handle with the slot in the latch sliding any mechanisms up or down as needed to fit the handle onto the door. In this kit the hole for the allen key is at the bottom of the faceplate.
