One key to success is to remember that grout has a limited working time and can dry before you know it if you grout an area that s too large the grout will set up and become difficult to work with or remove. Use a hard edged rubber grout float and hold it at a 45 degree angle. Work in a small area at a time roughly a 3 x 3 foot section. The next tiles will be laid out evenly to each side for a balanced installation. Hold a tile at this spot accounting for a 1 8 inch expansion gap.
But the misconception that they can go groutless might leave your work looking unprofessional. Lay out the tiles in the area you wish to install them or in an area of equal size on a worktable if tiling a wall. Then use a level to extend the line along the work area. Flatten the tile with a grout float if necessary.
Follow the package instructions for the tile mastic or thinset used for adhering the tiles to the wall. Spread the material in sweeping arcs pressing it into the joints to fill them completely. Step 2 lay your tile pattern find the center of your wall and use a carpenter s level to mark intersecting plumb vertical and level horizontal lines. Mark the wall at the top of the tile.
Grouting is not difficult to do well but it is even easier to do poorly. Use long sweeping motions to apply mortar to the wall and start placing your tiles in the marked locations. This trick removes the challenges of level grout lines and square corners. Rectified tiles still very much rely on grout.
The first tile should be laid at the center of the wall furthest from the door if you are tiling a floor or in the bottom center of a wall being tiled. In truth rectified tiles allow for a thinner grout line. The tiles must be set before you attempt to grout them or they will move and cause you headaches. Lay out the tiles directly onto the area where you will install them.
Slightly rock the sheet up and down perpendicular to the trowel lines to collapse the ridges and help the tile settle into place.
