Install roof overhang. Soffit panels are most commonly made of vinyl or metal so they re low maintenance and can be found in almost any color to match your exterior color scheme. At this time any valleys on the roof should also be flashed with an ice and water membrane. Insert the wide flank of drip cap underneath the first course of shingle or tile all the way through. Be sure the larger edge is laid so that the small edge of the next panel will overlap it.
Install metal panels or shingles align the first metal roofing panel so that it overlaps the edging by 1 2 to 3 4 of an inch and is square to the roof line. This gets snow and ice drip line farther away from the building walls without the danger of the metal roofing bending under the weight. With a flat shed roof the roof simply extends past the wall plate to provide an overhang. If it doesn t pull the drip edge out slightly from under the shingles.
Here is a short video showing how. Seal the flashing to roof by using special roofing cement. This ice and water membrane is typically applied to overhang the eaves by 1 4 3 4. The size of the roof overhang you choose depends largely on the style of your shed s roof.
Install sheet metal drip cap over the lower rim. Sheets should be checked to ensure that the top side faces upwards. To be fully effective it should extend up the roof to a point at least 24 inside the vertical extension of the interior side of the wall. Also remember that your overall approach to installing metal roofing panels should be one that is square to edge.
How to install a drip edge. Secure the drip edge with roofing cement. It is used to cover and protect the exposed ends of the roof rafters and provide a cleaner look to your home. The outer edge must be extended beyond where the gutter is located.
The overlapping sheet edges should be raised facing the direction of installation i e positioned the same way as the other sheets. Depending on the style and aesthetic look you are aiming for you could extend this overhang even more. As a rule of thumb this overhang should be at least of an inch. Position your sheets on the ground before raising to the roof for laying.
