Jacking Up A Barn Roof
The small beams are attached to the side of the bents with steel plates says tom.
Jacking up a barn roof. This time i was jacking the porch roof up so i could install my final and last portion of half round gutter. So i found myself having to jack up one corner of our front side porch roof. This is the 3 rd time we ve jacked up a portion of this house. We started where the roof showed the least amount of damage.
I assume the steel you put in is the length of the house. Stage 1 step 1 jacking up the first section of roof. Drive the remaining carriage bolts into the two by six rafter and tighten them all up. First perform step 2 except keep the string under your beam and off to the side a bit to make room for some framing.
Best approach to jack up a sagging ridge i have pushed a few ridges back up by jamming 2x6s under the ridge at 4 to 6 foot centers. Then lower the jack down a little at a time so that the metal can take the weight of the roof. Once you have established how much the roof sag needs to be jacked up lay a 2x4 plate across the ceiling joists and nail directly under the ridge of the roof. The smaller beams rest on top of the large front to back beams.
Remove the jack quickly and set the iron onto the entire beam. Measurements for materials were taken this way because of wooden blocks already attached to rafters. Place the jack back underneath the beam but this time under the iron piece. With the large beams in place workers cut five holes in the side of the barn and slid in five smaller beams one next to each bent the transverse supports inside the barn.
Now add collar ties from one side of the rafter to the other. Jacking up a porch roof at a sidewall.
